Subodh Kerkar had created a few copper discs (about a meter in diameter), as part of a series of lamps he was working on. One evening he loaded these discs in his jeep along with some electrical cable and headed for the beach. He dug two craters in the sand, covered them with the copper discs with electric bulbs underneath them and ran the cable with electric connection under the sand. He then switched on the lights and was stunned! He was looking at a mysterious effect on the seashore. It could have been an UFO; or perhaps a surface of a new planet not yet discovered….. ‘The Tenth Planet’. As it started getting darker the work started evolving. It was a sight which gave the viewer goose bumps….. He was surprised at his own creation. As the evening progressed and darkness dawned on the beach the tenth planet turned into two rings of light floating in black night; with the sound of the sea as the background music. That was his first installation which opened up new vistas in his creativity and consolidated his old bonds with the ocean.
