Maize was domesticated in the Tehuacan valley in Mexico. In the late 15th or early 16th century, maize was taken by the Portuguese and the Spanish to Europe. The Portuguese then brought it to Goa and from here it went to Africa as well. In Swahili, it is called Mahindi (from India) and is the main ingredient of the staple food, posho. In India maize is the third important food crop after rice and wheat. The sculpture depicts Alfonso de Albuquerque wearing armour inspired by maize. There is no doubt that maize came from South America. It is believed that maize might have arrived in India in Pre-Columbian days. A 12th century sculpture of Goddess Ambika, in Shravanabelagola in Karnataka depicts her holding a corn cob in her left hand. Some scholars consider, however, that it is not corn, but ‘Muktaphala’, an imaginary fruit made of pearls.
