DOVE
Picasso’s drawing of doves is celebrated as a symbol of peace; worldwide. Peace can only be established if the people of the world connect with love and empathy. Subodh Kerkar planted hundreds of cut-outs of doves on the beach with the hope that the waters of the oceans will carry the message of peace to all shores.
DRAWINGS ON THE BEACH
“The waves write their poetries on the sand, and not satisfied wipe them off over and over again”. The artist decided to create transitory drawings on the sand, which will be eventually wiped off by the waves.
MIRRORS
Subodh Kerkar’s engagement with mirrors started many years ago, when he decided to plant mirrors in nature. “Human beings like to admire themselves in mirror, why not give an opportunity to nature to admire itself”. The artist placed mirrors on the wet sand, for the waves to play with it. The sky reflects in the mirrors. The incoming waves cover the mirrors with sand and the receding waves wipe it away, creating a spectacular drama.
Palm Leaves
The palm trees are inseparable from the seashore. It is as if the shore adorns a necklace of palm trees. Subodh Kerkar has created a number of works, inspired by the coconut trees. Kalpavriksha is a mythical tree in heaven, which grants every wish. Coconut tree is called the Kalpavriksha on earth. The artist has worked with coconut shells, leaves and pidde (the stalk of the palm leaves).
Pide
The coconut tree is called the ‘Kalpavriksha’ on earth. Kalpavriksha is an imaginary tree in the heaven which is supposed to grant all your wishes and a coconut tree almost does that on earth. The artist have worked with palm leaves and coconuts and this is an installation which is with stalks of the palm leaves. The stalk of the palm leave is called ‘Pide’ or ‘Pido’. So the artist have created a circle using the stalks of the palm leaves celebrating the tree which is so useful to everybody.
