Subodh Kerkar created this sculpture in the old town of Suzdal in Russia, in the year 2019. It was created using pieces of typical wooden windows from Suzdal. Sunflowers originate in Central and South America. The Spanish carried the seeds to Europe. Peter the Great from Russia came across Sunflowers in Amsterdam, and took the seeds to Russia, in the early 18th century. The Russians developed many new varieties of the flower, including the Mammoth Sunflower. The Russian Church allowed use of Sunflower oil during lent, when animal fats were banned. From Russia, different varieties of Sunflower were distributed all around the world.
