In 1510, the Portuguese invaded Goa. They immediately began converting Goans to Christianity. Hindu temples were demolished, and churches were built in their place. Hindus transported their deities in canoes down the Mandovi and Zuari rivers to Ponda which was not under Portuguese rule. TNew temples were constructed for the Deities. Even today, the boatmen of the village Adpai, whose ancestors saved the Gods 600 years ago, are given the honour of carrying the Palanquin of Gods during annual festivals.
