Over 2,500 years ago, Emperor Ashoka witnessed the immense death and devastation caused by the Kalinga War. Confronted with the human cost of violence, he renounced war and embraced the Buddhist philosophy of non-violence. Yet history since then has continued to be marked by wars and conflict. Will today’s leaders attempt to emulate Ashoka’s transformation? In these drawings, the Buddha is in tears. Through a series of ink works, I have attempted to portrays a weeping Buddha — a quiet witness to humanity’s continued violence, and a reminder of the enduring relevance of compassion and non-violence.
