DRAWING ON A SUITCASE

I prefer to travel light. For a 15-day trip to Australia, I carried only a cabin-size suitcase.

At Sculpture by the Sea, I was given a small but heavy sculpture of a wave, which I loved. I also bought several bottles of ink and a large quantity of paper from an art supply store. (I feel like a child in a candy shop whenever I visit an art materials store.) Soon, I needed a bigger suitcase, so I bought a large yet lightweight one. At airport baggage claim, I often struggle to identify my luggage. To solve this problem, I drew on my new suitcase with a permanent marker, making it instantly recognizable. In the process, an ordinary suitcase became a unique artwork, and a very expensive suitcase.
