THE OCEAN CROSS
Medium: Copper, oyster shells created by the ocean
Size: 41 x 26 inches
Years: 2022 - 2025
I created this copper cross and placed it in the ocean for three years at a site where oysters naturally grow on the seaside rocks. Over time, the sculpture became completely encrusted with oyster shells, allowing the sea itself to transform its surface. The work is therefore a collaboration between the artist and the ocean. The Ocean Cross celebrates the ocean’s historic role as a carrier of cultures, ideas, and religious philosophies from one shore to another. It reflects on the sea not only as a physical passage but also as a force that connects civilizations and shapes shared histories.
